Prophet of Allah

Isma'il (AS)

إسماعيل

Known in other traditions as: Ishmael

Sent to: Arabia

The patient son of Ibrahim, ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, co-builder of the Kaaba.

Story

Born to Ibrahim and Hajar in old age. As an infant, he and his mother were left in the barren valley of Mecca. When water ran out, Hajar ran between Safa and Marwa seven times — the origin of Sa'i in Hajj. Allah opened the spring of Zamzam at Isma'il's feet. Years later, Ibrahim was tested with sacrificing him; both submitted, and Allah ransomed Isma'il with a great ram. Ibrahim and Isma'il then raised the foundations of the Kaaba together.

Key Lessons

  • Patience as a son to a father's mission is itself prophethood.
  • Hajar's faith in the desert is honored every Hajj.
  • Zamzam still flows today as a sign.
